How To Get Fit With VR

It seems that there is nothing easier than getting a beautiful, fit, and healthy body. There are tons of fitness exercises you can find on Youtube fitness channels and mobile apps. Many of them are free. Just do exercises and be like those insta models. Then why is it so hard to make fitness a part of life?

- Because it is boring.
- Because you don't have motivation.
- Because you don’t have energy.
- Because you don’t like it.

It doesn’t matter what of the answers above are “you.” If the word "Gym" is not what brings smile on your face, but you want to get in perfect body shape - Virtual Reality fitness is your cup of tea. Are you ready to burn off thousand calories and make exercise process suuuuper fun? Dear, your YES is so loud I can hear it! So, let's get started. I’ll show you how to properly use virtual reality technologies to make your body fit and healthy.

VR, VR Headsets, VR Fitness - What Is This?

First thing first, let's explore what Virtual Reality (VR) is. It is an artificial reality created by a computer. To get immersed in it, you will use a VR system - a special headset that lets you “be inside the game.” The technology is based on a stereoscopic 3D effect that makes the game graphics on display look so real you feel absolutely immersed in it.

While playing the game, you will be jumping, squatting, dancing, working with all your body - and having lots of fun! There are tons of various VR fitness games for your taste - virtual tennis, dancing, box, and even fencing. In VR you can do everything you want, while your body is getting an amazingly effective calorie-burning workout.

VR fitness is great, because you need just 2x2 square meters in your bedroom or near your TV in the living room for a super enthralling virtual reality fitness session.

Why Is VR Fitness Workout Better Than The Usual?

The brand new VR technology makes you LOVE exercising. ‘Fitness” and “consistency” are two words that stand together (yep, it’s often hard to put those together). When you wear the headset, your body doesn’t actually estimate your moves as a burden. It takes it as a part of having fun, and every exercise is much easier and exciting to perform.

10 reasons to exercise with VR:

  • You exercise while playing games
  • VR helps you build a healthy lifestyle
  • 20-30 minutes of exercise is enough to see results
  • You don’t feel tired and sore during a workout
  • You have a strong motivation to exercise
  • You can try yourself in different sports
  • Exercise any time you want
  • No expensive gyms
  • No expensive trainers
  • No expensive fitness equipment

Which VR headset is best for fitness?

Oculus Quest 2

Oculus Quest 2 — Advanced All-In-One Virtual Reality Headset — 256 GB.
BUY FOR $399

  • The all-in-one Quest 2 is a technological sensation - this is the unique headset that doesn't require connection to a computer.
  • The innovative design of adjustable straps provides for comfortable and snug fit around your head.
  • WOW!-inspiring games for a super intense cardio workout.
  • Next-generation graphics and MEGA-powerful processor to run incredibly detailed virtual reality experiences.
  • Facial interface made of soft body-safe foam is a pure pleasure for your skin.

My experience:
Oculus Quest will open a door to fantastic virtual worlds and will do it without wires and fuss. Once you get used to workout without being tied to a computer, you won’t want to play on any other headset. I have bought one November 2020, because I didn’t want to spend extra money on purchasing a powerful PC for a VR headset. Fow now, on February 2021, I have 2 headsets - Oculus Quest and Quest 2. I love my Oculus a lot. Playing VR fitness games I have already lost 3 kg. Watch this video where I share my VR fitness journey.

How To Choose A VR Fitness Game?

Cardio

VR games differ not only by genre but also by the type of physical exercise. For example, such genres as dancing, box, aerobics, or archery will provide you an intense cardio exercising. They are perfect if you want to burn a lot of calories and lose weight fast. A 20-30 min cardio session with VR will let you burn around 200-300 calories. It is similar to fast running on a treadmill.

Strength training

If you want to get your muscles toned and make your buttocks lift, try playing Hot squat. It’s a total leg and bum killer, but your brain takes the process as something super easy and enjoyable. (disclaimer: the next day, you will discover muscles you never knew existed. :D You can take some ankle or wrist weights or resistance bands to make it a strength training. Anyway, I recommend being careful with using weights and advise on not using them if you are a beginner.

My opinion:
My choice for the first VR fitness game is “Beat Saber” or “FitXR” because they provide good exercise for all your body and give you a perfect understanding of what VR Fitness is. The games give you the opportunity to choose a comfortable level of difficulty and increase speed and complexity gradually. How Often Do I Need To Workout For Better Results?

If you’ve never exercised before, I recommend you start with a 15-30 minute session 3-4 times a week. After a month of exercising with VR, you will notice that your body is toned, your resistance has grown, and you lost some weight.

The higher is your starting weight, the bigger will be your weight loss during the first month.
